CHOOSE YOUR CARD
30-second guide: which Discover card fits you?
Compare cards against your everyday spending and how much account management you prefer:
Discover it® Cash Back
Rotating 5% quarterly categories
People who shop at supermarkets, gas stations, restaurants, or Amazon and are willing to activate categories each quarter for higher rewards in designated categories.
- 5% cash back at eligible U.S. merchants in designated quarterly categories (quarterly spending cap: $1,500).
- First-year Unlimited Cashback Match provides 1:1 matching; reaching the quarterly spending cap can yield an effective $150 (equivalent to 10%).
- $0 annual fee, no foreign transaction fee (0% FTF), and 0% introductory APR for the first 15 months on purchases and balance transfers.
- Quarterly activation is required; purchases before activation earn only the 1% base rate.
- Bonus rewards apply only at eligible U.S. merchants in designated categories, with a $1,500 quarterly spending cap.
- This is the standard version (listed by Capital One as Excellent Credit), not a student card. Approval depends on individual credit and income review.
Discover it® Chrome
Automatic 2% on gas and dining
Cardholders with consistent commuting, gas, and dining expenses who prefer automatic rewards without managing rotating quarterly categories.
- Automatically earn 2% cash back at eligible U.S. gas stations and U.S. restaurants (combined quarterly cap: $1,000).
- Bonus rewards apply automatically without quarterly activation; the gas category includes certain eligible public EV charging facilities.
- After the first-year Cashback Match, eligible gas and dining purchases have an effective 4% rewards rate.
- Gas and dining share a combined $1,000 bonus-spending cap per calendar quarter; spending above the cap earns 1%.
- General purchases outside gas and dining earn only 1%; bonus categories are narrower than Cash Back's.
- This is the standard version. Approval still depends on individual credit history and income review.
Discover it® Miles
Unlimited 1.5x on all purchases
People who prefer one flat rewards rate without tracking purchase categories and value the flexibility to redeem miles for travel credits or cash.
- Earn unlimited 1.5x miles on all eligible purchases, without managing quarterly categories.
- Eligible new cardholders receive a first-year 1:1 Miles Match; after settlement, this is equivalent to 3% on all purchases.
- The current reference value for cash or travel statement credits is $1 per 100 miles, but redemption rates may vary by option and may change. Check account redemption terms for eligibility and deadlines. Miles do not expire while the account remains open.
- The ongoing rate is 1.5x (equivalent to 1.5%), lower than dedicated bonus cards in categories such as supermarkets, gas, or dining.
- Travel-credit eligibility and deadlines follow applicable account terms; overseas acceptance depends on local partner networks and merchants.
- This is the standard version. Approval still depends on individual credit history and income review.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Discover it FAQs
First-year Match posting, U.S. merchant restrictions, 0% APR fees, and overseas card use explained.
Unlimited Cashback Match is a welcome-reward mechanism for eligible new Discover cardholders: all eligible cash back (or miles) earned during the first 365 days from account approval receives a one-time 1:1 match, with no overall matching cap.
Posting and rules: Rewards are not doubled immediately when you make a purchase. The match is deposited within two billing periods after the 365-day period ends. Transaction processing and posting dates and applicable terms determine which rewards count. For example, $300 in eligible first-year cash back earns an additional $300 after settlement, for a total of $600.
Quarterly bonus example: For a designated Cash Back quarterly category, spending up to the $1,500 cap earns $75 in regular quarterly rewards. If eligible for matching, another $75 is added after the matching period, for an effective $150 (equivalent to 10%). Unlimited matching refers to the total eligible rewards matched; the $1,500 quarterly bonus-spending cap still applies.
Each calendar quarter (Q1: months 1–3, Q2: 4–6, Q3: 7–9, Q4: 10–12), Discover designates everyday spending categories, such as supermarkets, gas stations, restaurants, Amazon.com, Target, or wholesale clubs. Activate on Discover's website or app before or during the quarter to earn 5% cash back on the first $1,500 spent at eligible U.S. merchants in the designated categories. This yields up to $75 in regular quarterly rewards; with eligible first-year Match, the effective total after settlement is $150, or 10%. Spending above $1,500 and outside the designated categories earns 1%.
Note: Official terms limit the 5% bonus to U.S. merchants. Some cardholders report that certain overseas purchases still trigger 5% when the online payment or acquiring institution is registered in the U.S., but the official base rate for ordinary local overseas in-person spending is only 1%.
No. Chrome's bonus rewards apply automatically, without quarterly activation. Purchases at eligible U.S. gas stations (including certain eligible public EV charging facilities) and eligible U.S. restaurants (including cafés, fast food, and delivery platforms) automatically earn 2% cash back on the first $1,000 combined each calendar quarter. Spending above $1,000 and other general purchases earn 1%. For eligible new cardholders, the first-year Cashback Match produces an effective 4% rate on gas and dining.
The current reference value for cash or travel statement credits is $1 per 100 miles, but redemption rates may vary by option and may change. Check account redemption terms for eligibility and deadlines. Miles do not expire while the account remains open.
All three Discover it cards currently offer 0% introductory APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 15 months. Important: balance transfer fees still apply during the introductory period; consult the application terms for the actual fee. After the introductory period, the regular variable APR is 17.49%–26.49%. Cardholders must still pay at least the minimum payment on time each month. Although Discover has no penalty APR (late payments do not trigger a higher rate), late fees may apply under the terms (up to $41), and late payments may affect credit history.
The Discover it range has no foreign transaction fee (0% Foreign Transaction Fee, 0% FTF), so the issuer does not add a 3% currency-conversion charge to cross-border purchases.
Discover uses its own network and global partner networks, including China UnionPay, Japan's JCB, Korea's BC Card, and Diners Club. However, actual acceptance varies by location, the merchant's acquiring institution, and transaction processing; acceptance by every overseas merchant is not guaranteed. Check acceptance at your destination and carry a backup payment method such as Visa or Mastercard. No FTF does not eliminate separate third-party service fees charged by overseas merchants or ATM operators.
The three cards compared here are standard consumer versions of Discover it, not Discover it Student cards for enrolled students. Capital One's official card comparison page places Discover it Cash Back in the Excellent Credit category.
Issuers consider overall credit history, payment records, income, and identity/address verification. No credit history does not guarantee approval. Whether an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is accepted or a Social Security number (SSN) is required depends on each card's current official application flow and terms. Read those terms before assessing whether to apply.
